This Month’s Sign of the Apocalypse

Blood Red Sludge

After discovering the latest omen of the world’s coming demise, the Clog encourages Berkeley students to put down their books and enjoy their short-lived time on Earth.

Hungary’s major national disaster was by far the most disturbing thing to register on our radar over the last few days. If you’re not in the know, here’s what’s up: a week ago tomorrow, a reservoir filled with poisonous waste — an unfortunate byproduct of alumina refining (which seriously sounds like a mediocre superhero movie plot device) — broke loose upon several villages.

At least seven people are dead and 150 injured in the wake of 180 million gallons of the sludge, which has made its way into the multiple rivers and contaminated thousands of acres of agricultural soil that can never be utilized again. Many of the injuries are due to chemical burns, as the waste is comprised in large part of alkaline and thus incredibly caustic. The current and future environmental damage is staggering to conceive.

Which makes it totally horrifying that the whole thing might happen all over again. The Hungarian environment minister is now calling the collapse of the reservoir’s north wall “inevitable” after a 25-meter crack appeared in the days following the original spill. Efforts to build dams and widen the dyke are underway; in the meantime, at least one town has evacuated and another is prepared to do so. Those villages already flooded are, of course, completely destroyed.

But wait — there’s more.

Environmentalists said high levels of arsenic and mercury, which can cause cancer, had been found in water polluted by the ooze and that, if airborne, this could enter the human respiratory system.

So … to recap: Sludge. More sludge. Dead and chemically burned Hungarians. Polluted rivers. Cancer cloud. And no one’s accepting the blame.

Buhhh.

Seven Signs of the Apocalypse

The Seven Signs are clear: We will be struck by deadly plagues, famines and earthquakes; The sky will turn dark and oceans will turn to blood; And the antichrist will emerge to fight the final battle between good and evil. Could this all be true?

Experts decode this powerful prophecy and come to a startling conclusion: there is now scientific evidence that many of these catastrophes could, in fact, be occurring. A star falling from the sky could be one of thousands of rogue asteroids that may be approaching earth. The plague foretold in the Bible could be a deadly strain of avian virus that researchers fear could kill millions. Oceans turning blood red could be triggered by microorganisms that release dangerous neurotoxins that have the same effect as nerve gas.

To reveal the ultimate truth behind the prophecy, this investigation will turn to the past to reveal why the prophecy was written, and why it maintains such a powerful hold on our imagination today.

The War of Light Against Darkness

Shrine of the Book Light and Darkness

The Shrine of the Book, a wing of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, is built to symbolize the scroll – The shrine is built as a white dome symbolizing the Sons of Light, and a black basalt wall – symbolizing the Sons of Darkness.

The shrine holds one of the Dead Sea scrolls found near Qumran. The War Scroll is an apocalyptic work describing the conflict at the end of time between the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness.

Although this war is said to extend over forty years, the writer of the scroll was particularly concerned with the details of the very final day of battle. After six bloody engagements during this last battle, the Sons of Light and Sons of Darkness are deadlocked in a 3-3 tie. In the seventh and final confrontation “the great hand of God shall overcome Belial and all the angels of his dominion, and all men of his forces shall be destroyed forever” (1QM 1:14-15).

In the end, all of Darkness is to be destroyed and Light will live in peace for all eternity.

I noticed that this war is hidden in the high priestess tarot. Adherents of the Mysteries have long held the idea that the Tarot has its origins in the arcane system of the Kabbalah. The job of the High Priestess, to offer secret knowledge, like the moon on a dark night, so that the querent can find their path. She sits between the pillars of dark and light, existance and negation, wax and wane. All secret knowledge is hers.

In The Secret Teachings of All Ages, Freemason Manly Hall (1901 – 1990) explained:

“Jachin–the white pillar of light…Boaz–the shadowy pillar of darkness. …These two pillars respectively connote also the active and the passive…the sun and the moon…good and bad, light and darkness.” iv
